Right. Do you buy that? Many getting the TRUE badge are surprised and skeptical (though most pleasantly) of this claim.
I'd rather have you think about the business end of this. Xanga Gear is new! True Badges are new! Coincidence? No. They go hand-in-hand. Truth be told: True Badges are little scratch-n-sniff enticements to get xangans to layout bucks for the real Xanga Badge available exclusively on Xanga Gear. I can almost hear it now: "You got the Badge, now get the Gear!"
...and "Hardcore Xanga users wear Xanga Gear!"Having ultra-subliminal hearing is a mixed blessing. I don't like to diss Xanga at all. But I feel that those who didn't get the TRUE Badge and feel slighted about it should understand the TRUE marketing that's involved with this seemingly elitist gesture.
Personally, I earned a chestful of medals while a sergeant in the military. I got badged-out, so to speak. Finally got tired of medals/badges and left the military. And no graphic badge awarded now as a marketing ploy is going to make a difference to me one way or the other.

regarding the rank thing: it's true, we have created a badge. but unlike the LIFE badges (which have been very popular), you can't buy these... you can only earn them by using the site. i'll be posting about true soon - i want to change some wording on that help page about them first tho.

I hadn't thought of it this way before... but I kinda thought the whole thing was BS when I noticed VeryModern doesn't have a True Badge. She's about as "hardcore" as Xangans get!

I think the true badge hype will die down in a couple of weeks time
there's no connection to xanga gear. it's just a way to recognize people who use xanga a lot, or who help out in the help forums. we have the LIFE badge, but that's something you can buy - this is something you can only earn.
@LuckyStars - sorry if xanga gives you the impressions that you're a loser. are you referring to the encouragement on the claf page to our users to try out themes? i'll have to check out the wording of the text there. let me know if there's something in particular about the wording that bugs you.

john has spoken. and i've never known him to speak false, so i will give him the benefit of a doubt. but even if TRUE Badge isn't a deliberate marketing strategy, it will serve, for some, to feed a TRUE pride or a TRUE envy, both of which can and will be channelled (even if only by xanga peer pressure) into increased Xanga Gear sales. all good for the corporate bottomline - which in itself, is not a bad thing.
but, regardless, it reeks, by design, of rank: Xanga has just created a division in the form of The-BadgeHaves and The-BadgeHave-Nots, regardless of its intent. ah, still there is hope, we are told, in the form of social mobility: you can move-up into The-Haves status, you can earn your rank, if you learn to march hardcore.

While I don't care much one way or the other if Xanga creates these sorts of things, what does get my goat is how many people are bitching about it. (Yes, I know, I've complained about Xanga puh-lenty over the years.) I mean, it's SO harmless. (As far as I know.) Know what else gets my goat? How many people are complaining about the recent changes that Xanga has made to their 'look'. Perhaps, if they took a few seconds to look around, they would notice that they can change the look back to 'classic' and wouldn't have had to write a long, snarky post about it. (Not referring to you here, just ... ugh; It's making me crazy.)
