I wonder sometimes
if I'm really in the mix.
Or if I'm merely here
as just another representative of humanity
to assist it in putting a good face forward
in the battle for the galaxy
and that otherwise my individuality
is entirely meaningless.

It is not so much that I really mind pitching
from the deep middle outfield and even
suffering the ridicule of not throwing
strikes consistently enough to shut
down the opposition with utter
intrepidity as the fact
that’s it’s not fair
to have to pitch
and field
with no
backup
and
chase
instead of merely
watch the homeruns
make mockery of my predicament.
