Will Xanga survive the web technology retrenching that’s presaged by the recent steep decline in the valuations of computer technology and internet company stocks?
Maybe I should work on a portable Xanga obituary postable in short notice. Create a central directory of member’s email addresses for purposes of post-hosting access. Scour old postings for the “best of Xanga” to be copied, later compiled, and reposted on an another domain.

One does wonder how Xanga will continue with no visible means of support. I think anything we've written that we think is worth keeping should be backed up somewhere. I would hate to lose contact with the people I've met here. I love that we have a group that is so diverse. Other online communities of which I've been a part have been more homogeneous, which has a certain appeal to be sure; but in the comfort of a group like that, there is not as much opportunities for growth. I would surely miss Xanga.

As for Xanga, there's always the chance someone would buy it before it went under. I'm constantly having things bought out from underneath me--Hotmail sucked up by Microsoft; Onelist taken over by Egroups taken over by Yahoo...
But, when I'm on vacation next week on a cable modem, I think I'll save everything I've written on Xanga to disk.

I take things with a grain of salt.
My guess is that they're aggressively building up their active user base so that they have lots of trafic stats to show advertizers, and thus be able to start at a nice high rate. But that's just a guess. I too ahve been wondering how they survive. My guess is that some form of cash generation is going to come on the scene soon. I just hope it isn't too obnoxious.
