Xanga has a new 'CSO'... and I thought they only hired kids.
NEW YORK, Aug. 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- As part of its comprehensive approach to online safety, Xanga has hired experienced cybercrime prosecutor, Stephen Kline, to lead the company's safety and compliance initiatives as Chief Safety Officer. Since 2000, Kline has worked in the New York Attorney General's office as an Assistant Attorney General in its Internet Bureau, where he has investigated and prosecuted numerous high- profile Internet-based fraud and compliance violations in both state and federal courts.
During Kline's six years with the Attorney General's office he:
-- Prosecuted the first enforcement action of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act
-- Jointly prosecuted with the FTC a group of more than 60 adult Web sites for hundreds of millions of dollars in credit card fraud –- the largest case of its kind ever
-- Prosecuted several spam operations, including some of the world's most notorious spammers
-- Served as an expert lecturer for law enforcement and attorneys on compliance with Internet-related laws
"Xanga is an industry leader because of its innovative approach and strong commitment to safety," Kline said. "I'm looking forward to working with both the Xanga team and law enforcement in order to continue to offer Xanga users a safe place to express themselves."
Reporting directly to Xanga CEO John Hiler, Kline will serve as Xanga's chief liaison to law enforcement officials, regulators, policy-makers and industry groups. Additionally, Kline will be responsible for defining Xanga's abuse policies and procedures, and also ensuring that Xanga is in full compliance with state and federal law.
"What makes this so exciting is that Stephen is a real innovator," said Hiler. "His work with the New York Attorney General's office was on the cutting edge of Internet law. We're hugely excited to have an innovator like Stephen focused 100 percent on the safety of our users."
Kline will begin work at Xanga on August 16, 2006.

I saw your comment at John's site and that you stopped by mine, so I wanted to relate my side of things ...
When the "messages" launch was announced, they weren't quite ready; It was still a work in progress. John announced that you could disable the feature, but that option wasn't even available to us. ("Don't allow" was not the default.) It appeared almost an hour later in our privacy options. Things were crazy-whack for awhile. As they attempted to "fix" the fact that I couldn't turn it off, and all the while say that I was not checking the right box, weird events happened. The following is a post that I had up until things were resolved:
Okay, just thinking out loud here ...
<LI>Xanga launches "messages".
<LI>I was unable to disable the feature, so I left several comments on John's site.
<LI>I interact with another Xanga team member who sends me some test messages.
<LI>He informs me that, according to their database, I have selected "allow" and not "don't allow" (messages).
<LI>I receive this information via a message sent from MY ACCOUNT.
<LI>For the umpteenth time, I check "don't allow".
<LI>During the aforementioned events, I am repeatedly booted from Xanga. I have to sign in several times although I didn't sign out and this NEVER happens to me. I. AM. ALWAYS. SIGNED. IN. (This is the message that I received from myself: Sorry to be such a bother - in our database, we're seeing your setting on Allow all users to send me Messages. Can you go there again, and just click "Don't allow anyone to send me Messages" (even if it's been clicked) and then click Save changes? )
<LI>Suddenly, I begin appearing on my own footprints history when I visit my blog.
<LI>I make this information public in the post below and in John's comment section.
<LI>Suddenly, my footprints no longer show up.
<LI>And, curiously, the name of the person who sent the message, in my Xanga message inbox, changes from "frejaluna" to "Chris".
(I realize that Xanga team members can access my account to fix problems, but it was eerie for awhile ... especially when I was receiving messages from myself.)
It'd be interesting to see what Mr. Kline will do around these parts! There's still a lot of rotten stuff around these parts.
Hey NFP, I know that you talk to some of the xanga staff. Do you think it's a good idea to make a suggestion that people shouldn't be allowed to access images from xanga sites through search engines? Lately, I've been getting a lot of hits to my site from people who are finding profile pictures of xanga users on google. It kind of makes you wonder why anyone would want to have them and I'm sure that a lot of people would believe that it's a violation of their privacy. So maybe it'd be possible for xanga to set up some sort of "no hotlinking" page whenever someone does this.
When is it legal for Xanga team members to access a persons account without their permission?
So with all this new security crappola you mean now I can come out of hiding knowing full well they will attack my stalker with legalalities?

apreci8_1337hax0r, we've been steadily increasing the optouts from search engines. It's something we'll continue to do and you're absolutely right - image optouts are definitely important as well.
I have gotten the clear message from a couple of you that more privacy features would be appreciated. We are definitely working on this - both multiple protected lists, and a total block from viewing a page. The problem with these features is that multiple protected would require a total revamp of our Subs reading page... and that the total block feature is extremely database intensive. But we are moving forward with both, and trying to overcome the technical obstacles.

Where I work, as a 'total admin god', I, too, can access anyone's account for purposes of remediation. But never 'as her'. First, I have no way of knowing a password because they are encrypted - though I could change it and then log in. But that's a big no-no. (And I would lose my job.) And, of course, then I could also never change it back to what it was since I wouldn't have known it to begin with. Also, there is no way whatever for me to impersonate a user without logging in as her.
Sounds to me either that xanga admins have a way of looking up passwords -and that would be a huge security problem - or that they have a way of impersonating a user without knowing her password - and that would also be a huge security problem. Either way, no matter how well-intentioned admins are, it sounds like there's a huge problem here and that the log of actual user activity is not reliable. And it's not going to get fixed simply by enforcing a policy that says "Never, as an admin, log in as one of our users."
Now, I have no doubt in this instance that Chris was well-intentioned and thinking as an IT admin and not a security admin. Strictly as an IT admin, had I had the same capability, I might have tried the same thing. But I probably would have either wanted to get your consent or inform you of such first. But as a security admin, I'm pretty much shocked, not by Chris' action (as I said, it was understandable from a troubleshooting standpoint), but by the capability, in the first place, existing itself.
If impersonation is possible, I can always claim "someone else did it." Sounds to me like a defense lawyer defending a xanga client against some blog-perpetrated crime might find a judge willing to assess due justification to dismiss a case with this forensic finding.
John may want to ask Stephen Kline about this one!
...just thinking ...from an investigative point of view, an IP source log in conjunction with a user activity log might still be able to determine that a xanga PC from the xanga offices was used for this 'troubleshooting activity'. If that IP source log exists and is reliable.
Still, if as a malfeasant xangan I am careful and always use a proxy server to cloak my souce IP, I could still undermine the log of 'user activity' by claiming impersonation on Xanga is possible ...just speculating.
Still speculating... Maybe in the Blogosphere, technical security is generally more lax than in the business world and impersonation by administration is accepted as a technical capability that is then mitigated by a policy forbidding it. It could be technically tolerated, perhaps, by reasoning that blogs are not really truly 'sensitive assets' and that the cost of eliminating the capability of impersonation is prohibitively expensive and not warranted by a consideration of the value of the assets themselves. This might be the same reason for allowing passwords to pass in clear text over the internet (http: logins, as opposed to the more -secure socket layer- https:) So the reasoning would be: "Yes, there are some holes in security. But the overall risk to the blog assets from the vulnerabilities is low and the assets themselves are less than critical. Thus we are willing to assume the risks rather than devote costly assets (time, money, and perhaps some other correlative funcionality) to eliminating them completely."
There are also some techniques for impersonating a user specific to web applications (involving TCP, UDP, HTTP) that involve "stealing a cookie" and session hijacking. My guess is that Jodi's cookie was utilized.
okay so hiring a new security officer is definitely a good idea...*has e-stalkers too* mommarose, i gotta agree with you on this. new readers are nice but i don't like the idea of certain people (some of you might have noticed responses from a particular person disappear at random at one point) going through and finding out everything i've been doing. i actually stopped blogging here for a while in the hopes it would stop but somehow it hasn't. so to be honest the problem isn't just xanga. sadly i think it's most free blogging sites, xanga and certain others especially. with the large client base you guys have, it's no wonder you can't schedule for some system overhaul downtime. but i think that if you just went ahead and did it, people would be happier in the end. with some of the games i've played online they've done the same thing. sure, people grumble for a bit, but in the long run i think that they'll like the idea. maybe try a poll or something, i dunno. okay my brain is starting to run out my ears...too much thinking for now. blah...

This sounds like a good, and long overdue, idea. With the best will in the world, the existing Xanga staff are not (to my knowledge; apologies if this is untrue) security & cybercrime experts. Having a dedicated member of staff with that kind of experience under his belt should lead to some good policies and technical changes.
