What if I told you…
It pains me to witness the destructive power of ego as it lays waste to the blogging countryside. I don't think there's a lot we can do about that, but it's truly shaking my faith in the blogging medium itself.

working on a series of articles that I am tentatively calling The Mental Illnesses of Bloggers.

There seems to be something about the blog format itself that seems to encourage an almost cancerous growth of our egos.
Now what if I told your these words aren’t mine but those of xanga’s blogmaster (CEO-type), John, as shared-widely in two successive articles on Microcontents News? !
I know John has been dealing with quite a few incidents of blogging harassment lately. I even assisted as an intermediary yesterday between John and a blogger who turned to me seeking some relief from a blogging stalker. And I imagine, along with the efforts that John has been exerting in such matters comes something of a “siege mentality” with a resultantly less than utopian view of the burgeoning Blogosphere.
But to indict the blog format itself as a predisposition to illness?
In my own experience, especially of late, I have sat purely inspired, played with words, written first, and blogged only as an afterthought. I simply was too aroused by the muse and oblivious to the “blog format” to permit it to “encourage” me.
But maybe, from a practical viewpoint, what we all need to do once in a while is say fuck it. fuck blogging. fuck the whole sense of importance assigned to it. fuck lifetime membership in a format that encourages ego cancer. But never forget: bloggers are people, too. Hence, fuck the format, but power to the peeps.
There. Now I feel better. Good enough even to restate my original vision (4/5/2001) here:
Is blogging a new and emerging literary/graphical/(perhaps even audible) art form? Should it, will it rank among other genre of recognized expression such as the novel, the essay, the poem, the sketch? Will the “Art of Blogging” be a credited English course in tomorrow’s universities (surely, the kiss of death) ?
I dare to struggle and say: yes.
Though like a journal in having a timeline that flows like a river carrying fluid thoughts to the sea, the key to this art form (dare I say that?) is its performance: its interactivity. The best of posts, uncommented, remains the haunting one hand clapping in the forest—which is a rare and ethereal accomplishment: a pure essence of expression, standing by itself, pristine, an incontrovertible entity. But the highest form of blogging always invites response: the initial post is one hand posed awaiting the second hand, the comment, which issues the *clap* or sometimes the *smack* or sometimes a chaos of *slaps*, *hugs*, and *gawks*. So the timeline of expression invites a timeline of response—and thus the blog is woven as a form for all to see. Hence blogging distinguishes itself as a most genuine form of expression—and is utterly artistic at its height—when it creates community.
That being said, may I now add: let us all welcome ourselves to this expressive insurgency!

"...expressive insurgency." I really like that phrase. I'm with you, don't think blogging "encourages" egocentricity or mental illness. It does give an easy medium for expressing it, and given the cool and distant nature of the medium, it might be less destructive or dangerous than some other means of expression.

Well said. Thanks for writing this. As someone very new to Xanga and blogging in general, I'm always trying to understand it a bit better. Sometimes, I don't like what I've come to understand, but mostly, I just enjoy the expression that's out there.
You know, I have to say, since being introduced to this whole 'blogging' thing only a month or two ago I've really taken to it. It's allowed me to keep the people I know and care about in touch with how I'm doing, without spending countless inane hours on a damn telephone. To hear someone spout off about 'ego cancer' and such seems rather harsh and maybe even a little cold.
From what I've gathered from reading other people's blogs is that they're just trying to be a part of a community. They talk about their life, interactions and interests with those that they care about.
This 'Mental Illnesses of Bloggers' crap shows that whoever wrote that has had a few too many bad experiences and perhaps should think about finding something new to occupy his time. I mean if blogs have got him down then why read them? There are many other great things that we as humans can accomplish with our free time. To become bitter and generalize the blogging community as mentally deficient not only hurts the community, but also keeps others away who may be interested in joining.
Since I've been here, I've had nothing but good experiences. The sheer amount of wonderful, funny people I've met here is staggering and I've only been here 2 months. Someone once said that if you go looking for all the bad things in the world you shall surely find them. Perhaps its time for him to make an effort to return to his roots, remember why he started blogging in the first place.

Throughout history, every good advance has had the flip side of an evil potential. Medicines, which save lives can become poisons and toxins -- even a money-grubbing industry, etc... we all know countless examples. Blogging can open up the world to the painfully shy, the invalid, and the person in need of encouragement. Stalkers are the downside, along with the racists, bashers, liars, and decievers who hide behind their anonymity like sheet-hooded klansmen. It can be discouraging, but so can the world. If we look for the good, it is there.
This is most definitely the DOWNSIDE to blogging in a public environment. There is some WEIRD SHIT that goes on behind the scenes. Frankly, we should have a handbook that enforces Blogging Ettiquette. I would be happy to write such a piece. But I am sure the rest of the blogging community would see me as a do-gooder, or as trying to limit their freedoms of expression. But frankly, most PUBLIC places have rules. If you go to a restaurant with no shirt, no shoes... you're probably going to be asked to leave, or don more suitable attire. No?
I just think we need more stringent rules and regulations for this public place. Perhaps John should hire someone to look after these incidents, so you and he don't have to do all of the DIRTY WORK.
I haven't experienced anything bad through blogging like you've mentioned, so, I have no idea of what that would be like. I'm not quite sure what blogging has to do with ego. I can't imagine anyone thinking they're important because they have a blog. Anyone with a finger and a connection to the internet can have one....
Well, you HAD to know that I'd have an opinion on THIS one! *Smiles* Ego cancer...hmmmm...I see it anther way, perhaps it's too simplistic a viewpoint, but it's the one I am most familiar with...and that is...those who require a certain "type" of person to "feed off of" or "use" or whatever words you might chose to express the act of preying on others in any way WILL find what they need. They WILL find those who are trusting, or who are too open, or who simply don't see things in time to avoid them. It happens IRL, and it happens online. Child molesters find children, porn lovers find naked people, it's what makes the world go 'round. Ego cancer...I don't see ego in it, really...but I DO see mental illness, finding ways to express itself.

I also agree that there needs to BE a person to deal with things like you have had to, because in MY case, a few answers much sooner would have prevented a LOT of things...and there are STILL answers that are needed.
Hmm... I'm not sure I agree with John, especially with the mental illness comment, but if blogging does "encourage an almost cancerous growth of our egos," maybe a small part of it has something to do with the ability to accumulate piles of eProps and a loyal group of subscribers? But, if one's ego is boosted a bit by others eProps and comments, so what of it?
Nonetheless, I am sad to hear about bloggers getting harrassed, though, but I've never expected the blogging community to be a utopia. In many aspects it's not much different from the real world.

i have two sites that do nothing but offer blogging software... and i run a magazine where i write articles about blogging. heh, not sure what more i can do to be pro-blogging!
anyway, lately i have been down a bit on blogs. but the reasons why have nothing to do with xanga... it's happened much more in the world of blogs outside of xanga. somehow, xanga seems a (relative) safe haven in the blogosphere.
i do plan on writing more about this on microcontent news. recent health issues have prevented me from writing regularly lately... hopefully i've turned the corner.

I know where your heart lies (pro-blogging)--that's why your words screamed such a striking contrast.
Striking contrasts make interesting studies: Imagine a fireman pledged to saving lives needing to give CPR in a bombed building to the terrorist who bombed it and got caught up in the ensuing catastrophe?
So you're the fireman trying to save the building (blogs) and all the people (bloggers) in it from the terrorists (flamers, stalkers) even though some of the people (bloggers) you're saving are egotistical assholes (assholes) who will later, given the chance, sift through the debris for treasure. Afterwards, you go to the local bar (your forum) and complain about how the wasted office building (blog) seems to turn people into self-seeking assholes, and how the assholes waste the rescue effort (healthy blogging) by cluttering the landscape with their egotistical treasure-seeking. Or something like that.
No matter what type of community you are in, whether it's a blogging community, a message board, the real world or any other type of public place, there is bound to be people who don't get along. We can't expect everyone to like everyone. It's a shame that some people seem to go too far with their attitudes which can lead to arguments, harrassing, etc. One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch. If something gets out of hand here, such as somehow getting out into the "real world"...the harrasser contacting harrassed, then that shouldn't be up to you, John or anyone else here to take care of.
After awhile there is a general atmosphere and interest which I think develops..... It's what's in the comments and not the desire for props which makes Xanga a nice place to be.....
Not sure about inflated egos and all that..... It's the sharing of Ideas that's the important part. For me anyway.
I agree with your perspective (more or less) but would have phrased it differently. You have the soul of an artist whereas I am just a simple storyteller. My interest in blogging is more for the stories the medium creates about itself. The little dramas in comment wars. The windows into other peoples messed up minds which provide additional insight into "The Human Condition" (tm). Being a blogger is a good way for me to both learn the craft of writing through writing itself and through being amongst a community full of people who are honest enough to tell everyone else about their problems. A story teller is just someone who can spell unless they have stories TO tell.

My blog was always a jutted jaw waiting to be punched. Daring the blow. And I guess now I feel like I was somewhat incorrect in thinking I had a face worth hitting!
The blog medium will have the same volatile nature as the rest of the internet because of a lack of repercussions, because of a lack of fear. I can go into a chatroom for pregnant women and say all children should be aborted. I can go to AA chatrooms and talk about how much I love to drink and how harmless it is and how they are all pussies. There's rarely negative consequences. And blogging will turn the same way, obviously. Flamers are bad, and Lamers are worse. But they are bound to exist.
Sometimes, I force myself to open the XTools box and just write. And then post it. And not make it private. No matter what.
Good stuff. Raises the age-old question: which came first--the mental illness or the blog? Some might add "the Frankenstein ego."
Maybe each blogring should pick one representative for every 50 members to serve on a ruling council that can follow Femme to draft a constitution: "We the bloggers of Xanga in order to form a more perfect medium establish guidelines, insure electronic tranquility..."

Blogging affords a writer an instant connectivity with his/her reading audience. It also affords the very human tendency to be somewhat of a voyeur-- all in the privacy of one's home.
I do agree that blogging may encourage a cancerous growth of the ego FOR SOME PEOPLE. Just as some people lose sight of their original purpose, e.g. some policemen who get off on wielding their authority, a small restauranteur who goes national with chain-restaurants-- the original purpose of what they entered into changes. Their passion is re-directed and the quality of work suffers.
It's always easy to second-guess people making important decisions which affect large numbers. I like to give credit to the people who do the driving rather than the others in the backseat yelling out directions.

Feeling both non-commenting, non-eproping and wishing not to impart the dreaded 0 eprop on the blogger. I originally contemplated a state of "no-comment-but-quite-read" for this blog. But hence my dilemma! There are only four possible choices; (A "no comment" button being the unavailable)

...great post! The intent creates the experience. So it so with blogging. As to format? rules and restrictions? The kiss of death to freedom of speech, spontaneity, expression and choice. We do chose what we read and think on the whole, Xanga does an excellent job in screening the totally offensive.

Sorry to take so long to post this, but, I've been trying to get the response I want to make properly formulated. I still don't have it, but, this is as best I think I can get it right now:
I don't think it's reasonable for someone in John's position to make a sweeping indictment of the entire format. It's ignoring a very significant fact: the features/functions offered/supported by any given blogging community play a significant role in the kinds of personalities that will participate in that community. To provide a graphic analogy, imagine that each community has a different "uniform" that everyone who belongs has to wear. Pretend one community's uniform is, say...boys in speedos, girls in string bikinis. This is going to appeal to a very specific kind of person...those who think they look good in speedos/string bikinis, and those who don't (well, in reality, also those who love (and those who hate) to watch those who think they look good in speedos/string bikinis).
There are two features I can think of off the top of my head that go a LONG way towards establishing the kind of personality that will remain and thrive at xanga: the way e-props are structured (unlimited), and the lack of a middle ground between public and private posts.
I'm not saying these things are bad, just that they play a large role in affecting what kinds of people stay and play in the community.
