Xanga is proposing a graphical representation of one's subscribers to be included mainly after one's comments on other's blogs. They have nicknamed these "Lucky Charms" but what I gather they are trying to do is portray by the proxy of "# of subscribers" some extent of "Community Involvement".
Personally, I have about 10 reasons pro and 10 reasons con on this innovation--all effectively cancelling each other out. But I highly encourage any of you feeling strongly pro or con to go over to john's blog here and make your voice heard.
What I'm modestly proposing here, however, should xanga go ahead with this innovation, is an aesthetic modification. Below, you'll first observe xanga's current proposal. Thereafter, I have provided my design modifications.

Here were my design guidelines:
1) Liven-up Classic a bit by introducing b/w gradients matching the colors of Premium.
2) Stress continuity and progression in community building by an incremental "filling-out" of the xanga logo rather than suggesting firmer status divisions with solid colors.
3) Distinguish the "top 25" more subtlely and without requiring a dramatic loss/change of colors should someone someday slip out of the "top 25".

Yeah, I'm not sure I follow. Is that some kind of gauge to show how many subscribers your site has? If so, I don't think it'll ever even phase me in the least. Given my relatively low-key nature and small circle of readers, I'm never even terribly concerned with the amount of eProps I bring in. I'm always much more inclined to receive quality commentary than graphic representations of approval. I know I'll never be the "featured content" around here, and I don't ever aim to be.
It seems to me this is just another one of those needless graphics that'll pop up on my page. I'll live.

Like you, I basically end up neutral--after weighing what I consider the pros and cons.
But let me stress again, what I'm proposing here is a modification of the implementation should xanga go ahead with it. Consider this my *nomination* even while I have no inclination to *vote*.
eh..in the end it just makes it all a popularity contest...i have over 100 subscribers but only get 5-10 comments per day...so what's the point, really? how many of those subbers actually are reading me?
In which case...I dig your idea. Mainly for point number two. It's a more solid design concept to fill out the pre-existing logo.
I'm only neutral on the concept because of my lack of involvment with the inner-workings of Xanga. It's not a declared neutrality so much as a self-fullfilling prophecy of being laissez-faire in the first place and so ended up the same way.
Not sure what the point is of that... To discourage people from going to sites that have no subs cause they'll supposedly be bad? Or to discourage people from going to sites that already have tons of subs because they get enough traffic anyway? Or what? I don't see the point at all; and I am still bitter about the anti-Classic discrimination... teenagers lacking credit cards are cut no slack...

btw..i'm largely tech-ignorant, but could you explain something to me? if xanga is always wanting more people to upgrade to premium or 1) threatening that services will be cut back 2) services will be slowed down quite a lot, it doesn't seem to make sense to introduce something that people aren't wildly wanting anyway. looking around, it seems like there are usually other things demanded of the xanga gods...so why not invest in something else? maybe i just don't get how the whole thing works

well while they mess around with how many subs we have (which we already know when we go to our SIR list) maybe they can bring back the thingy that tells us how many props weve gotten since day 1....seeing as how they didnt warn us that they would be taking that away. I like your version much better, NFP, and I like the concept, but is there a real need for it other than the xanga god's rush to get new featues pumped out before their "code freeze"? Oh, and "Why are they pumping out new features nobody's actually asking for?" Because that's what geeks do. They get an idea that sounds really cool to them, they see if they can make it work, and then they show everybody. Some of these ideas fly immediately, some fail miserably. Most of them just hover in the middle. I think this is one of the middle ones.
