A great suggestion to modify the Featured Content page has been posted by gerry:
"I would like to see the 'featured content' page renew every hour on the hour, and include only those posting that were created in the last 24 hrs."
Please read gerry's log for the lucid rationale that underlies this suggestion.
Then consider my suggested enhancement as stated in my comment on gerry's post:
This is a great idea! But I would suggest an additional refinement. You do not get listed on the Featured Content page all because you submit a post. You must first get an eProp to get listed at all. Even a Comment without an eProp will not get you a listing. This is not fair. Although I tend to get the first eProp on my postings quite quickly because of the fair number of subscribers I've acquired, many new bloggers--some of whom have truly great and reading-worthy posts--may have a hard time getting initial recognition partly because the Featured Content page-which is used as a guide to what's popular-omits them until they get some recognition: a clear Catch 22.
True, everyone does get listed on the Newly Updated page, but in addition to gerry's running relative time schedule, I'd like to see every entry listed on the Featured Content page also-especially on the Front Five rotating listing. That way those seeking initial recognition will be promoted more fairly along with the *regulars* for whom it usually isn't an issue.
As long as the issue I bring to light above isn't resolved, I suggest that anyone who might be having trouble getting the initial eProp in order to get a Featured Content listing just create an alias identity and eProp themselves immediately after posting. You can, if you feel this is somewhat solipsistic, announce in your own Comment that you have logged in with an alias and *kick-started* your post. Think of it this way: If your back itches, and there is no one around to scratch it, you're a fool, if you can, but you don't scratch it yourself.

true...it will be very hard to get on the featured list for people who didn't come along during the big geocities spam-athon........I'd encourage new folks to get out & place alot of comments, eprops if they want, on featured logs......just to get themselves noticed....
the newly updated page can change quickly when alot of people are on the site.......it still puts new members at a disadvantage.

Currently the Featured Content page is wiped clean at midnight EST. Thereafter, you get listed as soon as you get your first eProp. Until there are more than 5 posts with eProps, the front page listing of Featured Content features everyone--I think. After there are more than 5 entries with eProps, the front page appears to pick 5 names as random from all. Often a name can appear twice in the list. I have actually seen the same name as 3 of the 5. Theoretically, I'd bet, one name could appear 5 times--the whole list! Everytime you refresh this page, you'll get a new list. Of course, you get the whole list if you click on the *more* hyperlink.
It used to be that if you had an old entry from a prior day and *merely* updated the time stamp that it, too, would enter the current Featured Content along with all of its comments and eProps. I believe that the blogger named eProps once did this and was catapulted to the top of the chart with some 30 or 40 pre-existent eProps. I believe that this bug has been fixed now, however.

I liked the new members box thingy. There are just so many blogs out there and not enough time to read 'em all.
I liked the listing of new members, too. With the number of members growing quickly, staying listed in the newly updated for more than a few seconds is almost impossible, and the randomness of the featured sites on the front page seems odd in some way.
Your idea is interesting--promote yourself by eproping yourself. I would bet there are people already doing it.
Agreed-on the New Members thingy-listing. Many of us, I think, liked just to welcome, check out (or, on the dark side: target for eProps) new members online in real-time. That can still be done by sorting through the Newly Updated listing, but not as cleanly. And clearly the resident time in most recent 5 Newly Updated is much less than would be the case typically for a most recent 5 New Members front page listing--so new members would tend to have more initial exposure for purposes of exploring and/or nurturing if initially segregated. In that case, the Newly Updated listing would exclude those on the New Members listing so as to make both listings more exclusively meaningful.
Also, how about another random 5 box listing: *unFeatured Content* listing only content that hasn't yet been ePropped? Then readers could read those entries and respond accordingly: either eProp/Comment them into Featured Content or leave them unfeatured fully understanding why the dismality doesn't fade.
Hmmm... I surely agree with Gerry's idea ... but creating an alias to eProp yourself ... not keen ... honestly, it brings back the whole concept of competition against one another.
The BEST way to get recognition for your blogs is to subscribe to a lot of people, prop them when they have good content, and hope that they in return read your blogs ... and possibly prop you ....
Creating an alias and propping yourself doesn't appeal to me one bit ... what ever happened to people that they always have to compete against each other ...
I say get rid of the damn featured content page all together and just have a lit of about the 50 most recently updated blogs ... get rid of competition on the damn site altogether. eProps would then be used for the sole purpose of congratulating someone on a great weblog, not to get to the top of any list. You know, I have to agree whole heartedly with Bluemoo. I think we are losing the whole concept of awards based on merit by trying to make a competition out of it...
Sure--anything that's fair to everyone is OK. But you know that Xanga won't eliminate Featured Content altogether: too many people use it, many seem to like it in some form, and a popular uproar would probably ensue if Xanga just reverted to *most recent*. The real reason Xanga would probably not abandon Featured Content is because, I'd bet, that overall readership would subside. I might still visit sites I like, and still browse for new material, but I would abandon my *extra* attention to what's most popular at any given time. Regardless of whether that's good or bad, *my* readership would decline somewhat and I bet that that would be the overall pattern, too. Hence, that move is unlikely to occur from unnamed Xanga programmers who have an interest in maximizing excursions.
To Bluemoo's comment: I fully agree, and in fact already wrote a comment on Gerry's site before she pointed out that we were thinking along the same lines! I think we've been together so long that we have a psychic connection...
To Notforprophet's most recent comment: I fully agree with the point of readership declining. I know that when the Xanga Gods changed the most ePropular sites method and I dropped from the top of the board I was a little disappointed. But then I still get comments and visit other's sites so it doesn't bother me anymore...

God, Steve--you always make sense! But this is your best, so far, in my opinion. I love the part about scratching one's back and the Alias bit. *L* Those people who will do these must be desperate. It seems like there's a popularity contest to get to the "featured content". *L* Once, I saw my name there, and I was at work--and I panicked! "Oh my God, I don't want everybody to see me!" I enjoy logging to release what's bothering me inside, log happy thoughts, things that I've done---I considered it my net diary. Now, if someone drops by, that's fine and dandy, they leave a comment or two, that's fine, too-- and if no one drops by, hey, it's not the end of me, I have a world outside Xanga. *S* If along the way, someone kind makes my day, even just one--that's a lot in my book already. That's how I discovered your site, because you took the time and since then, you always make sure to return the gesture, even as late as 2 a.m. and falling asleep on the keyboard because you were really tired, but you just have to drop a line or two. Now, who can top that? And what more can I ask for?

My suggestion about alias eProps was only as a workaround for those who feel the Xanga system is unfairly suppressing an appreciation of their posts by giving more exposure and popularity, of an arguably fixed total amount, to those already proven and popular. Which to some extent is the case. It was not suggested in the spirit of promoting oneself in any climbing and competitive sense of getting to the top of some list.
In fact, what one could due, if he/she feels that self alias ePropping is some form of masturbation is to remove the eProp--give themselves 0 eProps--once they get another genuine eProp from another genuine reader That would be tantamount to a statement saying: *The system is unfair to the novice and yet undiscovered and yet unsubscribed--of which I am one. I leveled the field to claim an equal stake and make it fair. I withdrew my self-support when no it was longer needed for its intended purpose.*
The real thrust of my main suggestion is for Xanga to fix their Featured Content and make it fair to everyone who posts whether or not they come with proven popularity, readership, and subscriptions. You stated that you would want to dispense with Featured Content altogether--which for me is fine IF it is FAIR. Until fairness abounds I'm all for fairness-enhancing workarounds. I think your cat here is a Fat Cat giving the finger to the little gal or guy. As for what is fair ... have NO system of featured content ... what could be fairer than that ??? Like I said ... a list of all sites updated in a day ... then everyone can see who's updated. NO COMPETITION therefore FAIRNESS.

Well, Bluemoo, I don't care what people do or don't do about ePropping themselves or others. I merely have remarked upon a possible strategy that some may use to redress unfairness as it exists for them. You have a proposal to make the system fair--which may be most excellent from a purist perspective--but can you implement it by yourself? My suggestion can make the current system fairer for some--and, yes, they can implement it for themselves at once. But whether they do or not and whether they followup as I proposed, is of no real concern to me. You gave me 1 eProp on this log, took apparent offense to the humorous interpretation of the cat's paw I attempted to add to your site of humor and laughter, then withdrew your eProp. I really don't care and of course it's nothing personal. In turn, I removed my 2 eProps from your blog, and now will put them back...because...it really doesn't matter. eProps don't exist in the Golden Eternity...but your spirit will...and that in the expression of your current log, I do enjoy.
And, yes, I'm always dreaming, but not seriously--though I was trained by Central American rebels to employ critical thinking.

Now, with that bit of pseudo-comedy out of the way, my view, for what its worth, is that apart from the original Geocities spam recipients who had longest use of the e-prop counter before it was abolished and thus amassed a larger numbers of subscribers initially, people these days can only get their sites significantly read by visiting others and leaving insightful comments. In other words, traffic to your site is directly proportional to the amount of time you spend adding to others' sites. The guestbook feature has added to people's ability to do this.
I don't visit the front page anymore. I used to, but stopped about a day after they introduced the featured content thing. I only really went before to see how I and my favourites were doing on the e-prop counter anyway. I spend enough time now reading the people I subscribe to and commenting where I think appropriate, and following links from comments made on their pages, or their own subscriber lists.
I believe I'm missing out on a great many logs started by newbies, but that would be less of a case if I'd bumped into comments left by them on my regular's sites. I do what I can with the time I have available to me...
Self-epropping is perhaps a valid method for people who don't have time time, or (heaven forbid) the inclination to read and comment on other's logs. Personally I'd rather not have to resort to that, but it all comes back to the reason you add log entries in the first place.
I think its great to debate on this sort of stuff. Hopefully it will give the gods of the Xanga-tron some insight on how to better provide for us free-loading members. Kudos to you for taking the initiative - I know if I had written the same post it wouldn't have gotten nearly the same amount of exposure as you doing it has.
